Inspired by Queen Lili'uokalani's song' Ku'u Pua I Paoakalaui,' Stratum is about the importance of land and soil, the place we live on, what it is and why it is important. The layers of earth and layers of facts about dirt are presented in eight layers of phrases. Laser-cut pages laid on top of each other express the complex web of life and how every living thing on earth is connected. The white color represents a delicate yet resilient life given by soil. The darkened edge of laser cutting is a part of the design to add dirt's browning effect. The life-creating process under the earth layers is not seen, but the result can be experienced.
